Carl de Gruchy, trained in medicine at the University of Melbourne and was appointed University of Melbourne Professor of Medicine at St Vincent's Hospital in 1962, continuing in the position until 1970. He was a pioneer in Australian and New Zealand haematology and was instrumental in its development from a fledgling discipline into one which is now a major clinical and laboratory-based speciality. The Carl de Gruchy Oration was established in his honour.
